This is the residence of Hisamori, a wealthy farmer and headman in Akiruno City, Tokyo. The site covers approximately 6,000 m2, and nine buildings are registered as national tangible cultural properties, including the main house, gate, showgura (storehouse), front storehouse, miso storehouse, western storehouse, former rice storehouse, sutra hall, and wooden fence. The main house is believed to have been built in the late Edo period and originally had a thatched roof, but is now covered in tiles and copper sheets. Of particular note is the all-zelkova entrance hall with a karahafu roof at the front, and the authentic double rafters on the gable. Within the property are a wooden-floored "mise" (storehouse) that functioned as a shop, known as a showgura, and a storehouse-style structure with an opening equipped with a door. The sutra hall, which also serves as a Buddhist altar, is extremely rare. Located in a waterside area near the confluence of the Tama River and Akigawa River, the entire estate, including its forested area and wooden fences, is a "cultural asset as a landscape," conveying the history of the region's role as a village headman, along with local industries such as sake and rice brewing. Architecturally and structurally, these residences are a fine example of the formality, structure, and design of late Edo to modern rural housing. Registered as a national tangible cultural property, they are a truly remarkable cultural resource.
