EP06 Transom build and pairing the frames: Building the schooner Malabar IV
A lot has happened, and this video is a proper catch-up. Ben works alongside Rémi Guillet, the French intern who stayed and lofted the boat in January, this time returning with Lucas Andlauer; both are finalising their studies at Les Ateliers de l'Enfer, a traditional maritime and boatbuilding training school in Brittany. Lucas points out what an opportunity it was to spend their week in Cornwall building a transom for Malabar IV and how much he would love to stay longer. Unfortunately, they both had to return to France, and the second part of this video is somewhat of an exposure of Ben struggling to align frames. I certainly worried, momentarily, that some frames might need to be re-lofted. At Ben's side is Sam Langhout, during the pairing of the frames process, is a new 'intern' or volunteer who's taken some time out of studying furniture-making in The Netherlands. Sam's proved to be very handy on the mainsheet, racing on a Pilot Cutter and sailing each Thursday with Ben on Alva. More from Sam in the next episode. Information in this video: cutting a pattern out of a cold-moulded transom, frame pairing. Timber stability and twists...(after it's been milled and sawn, then cut out and bevelled).
