Building a 12' Gartside Outboard Skiff out of Huon Pine Ep 1 Lofting and Setting Up

Boatbuilder Ian Smith , founder of the Sydney Wooden Boat School lost count of the number of boats he's built somewhere above 80. Ian retired from commercial work in 2013, but Cody Horgan, Senior Shipwright at the Wooden Boat Centre Tasmania enticed Ian out of retirement to run a course building a 12' outboard skiff designed by Paul Gartside. In 8 weeks in September and October of 2025, Ian and 3 participants built this beautiful skiff with Huon Pine planking, transom, steam-bent ribs, thwarts , knees and sternsheets , Celery Top Pine keel and keel batten, laminated stem, risers and rails and King William Pine sole boards. The owner who participated in this course will sand and apply varnish and paint.
