Thoppigala EP 01 | Meeyangolla Village Travel Documentary #travelweekend #overland #offroad
Exploring Thoppigala - A Journey Through the Heart of History and Wilderness In our latest documentary, we explore Thoppigala, a region historically associated with the Sri Lankan Army's anti-terrorism operations. While many recall its significance during challenging times, the area has now become a destination for curious adventurers. We embarked on an off-road journey to Thoppigala, opting for a unique route through Aralaganwila and Walamandiya, bypassing the more conventional paths from Kiraan or Iluppadichenai. Starting our trip from Welikanda, we stayed overnight at the Mahaweli Authority’s Ruhunu Ketha Rest House, beginning our trek early the next morning. Our route led us through the dense wilderness, guided by Praveen, who worked tirelessly to arrange permissions. Essential supplies were procured at Aralaganwila, as the remote paths have no shops until Kiraan. With special permits from the Mahaweli Authority, we passed through Maduru Oya and entered the Eastern Province, where we met Somalingam, a herder managing over 500 cattle in the jungle, contributing significantly to the local dairy industry. Continuing our trek, we reached Walamandiya Army Camp, situated deep within the forest. Recent rains had damaged roads, forcing us to navigate alternate paths and even cross flooded areas. This journey required an SUV due to the challenging terrain. After traveling approximately 30 kilometers, we intersected the route from Welikanda via Nelugala, reaching the Wadumune Junction and, later, the scenic Meeyangolla Lake. Arriving at Meeyangolla in the late afternoon, we were treated to a breathtaking sunset behind Thoppigala's iconic rock formation. Taking a refreshing dip in the lake, we remained cautious, as crocodiles are known to inhabit these waters. We were warmly welcomed by Thevanayagam, the local fisheries society chairman, who invited us to his home for tea and breakfast the following morning—an act of hospitality that deeply touched us. As the day ended, we headed to Tharavikulam, where we stayed at an army rest house, reflecting on the incredible experiences and connections we had made during our adventure.
