To give you a taste of the authentic atmosphere of this Soviet tour, I first had to travel to Moldova, flying to Chisinau, the capital. The city of Chisinau offers many glimpses of the former Soviet Union, so I decided to show you what is, in fact, the city's only street, a full 4.8 km long, where the center of political and economic power, as well as public life, unfolds. To visit Chisinau and get a feel for the city, simply walk down Stephen the Great and Saint Street. The signs of the USSR and the Communist Party are evident, and it's the perfect way to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Transnistria. To reach this unrecognized microstate, effectively within Moldova itself, you'll need to travel about 90 km from Chisinau to the first military checkpoint. To enter Transnistria, you'll need your passport to obtain a tourist visa valid for the day. If, like me, you'd like to stay overnight in Transnistria, usually based in the capital Tiraspol, you'll also need to show your hotel reservation at the entrance. We're now ready to enter Transnistria.
