Lecture by Dr. Kamila Kłudkiewicz accompanying the exhibition "The Collector: Ignacy Korwin-Milewski (1846–1926)". The aim of this lecture is to provide a broad context for Ignacy Korwin-Milewski's collecting activities by outlining the history of contemporary art collecting in the 19th century, with particular emphasis on pioneering institutions such as the Luxembourg Museum in Paris and the New Pinakothek in Munich. We will examine various approaches to building public collections of works by "living artists" and examine the significance attributed to such projects in the "long age." Dr. Kamila Kłudkiewicz holds a Ph.D. in humanities and graduated in law and art history from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Since 2015, she has been an assistant professor at the Institute of Art History at Adam Mickiewicz University and, since 2021, the head of the Audiovisual Archives of the Faculty of Art Sciences at Adam Mickiewicz University. Her research interests include the history of collecting, museology, broadly defined visual archives, and material culture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. She is the author of scholarly monographs and numerous articles in academic journals on these topics. Her latest book, "The Need for Duration: Iconographic Collections in Polish Lands in the 19th Century," was published in 2025.
