WASHWALL REPAIRS BEGIN! BRICKLAYING STARTS! DAM ALMOST OVERFLOWS! LLANGOLLEN CANAL BREACH UPDATE!

Washwall Repairs Begin! Llangollen Canal Breach – Latest Update! Thursday 9th July 2026 Yesterday, we saw them start to put the topsoil back onto the farmer's field. Today, it looks like they've made significant progress, as at least half of the field has now been covered again with topsoil, with about 60% of the soil pile still left to go! This morning, one excavator was working on the soil pile while another was in the field spreading the soil that had been placed there yesterday. No dumpers were working to begin with, but that soon changed as one dumper made its way down. The operators of the other two dumpers were preoccupied with a job at the compound, where they were building some sort of wooden platform. I'm not sure what it will be used for, but a flatbed truck arrived carrying sand. They then loaded the platform, along with a generator and some tools, onto the truck before heading south on the bypass, which doesn't really lead anywhere connected with the breach, so I don't know where they were going. Over at the lift bridge, there were now a couple of large piles of sand from Travis Perkins. I'm guessing this will be used to make cement for repairing the washwall. Later, scaffolding started to go up here, which I assume will provide a nice, dry, solid platform to work from. A cement mixer was then delivered, along with an assortment of equipment for the bricklayers. Over at the cofferdams, on the Grindley Brook side, there was a large build-up of water that was getting dangerously close to flowing over the dam and running down through the breach. Today was refuelling day for the boat pumps, so they had to return to Grindley Brook to be refuelled. The trouble is that while they're away, there are no pumps to stop the water from overflowing. They have to cruise the one mile back to Grindley Brook, get refuelled, and then return before the water overflows. This happens every two weeks. Luckily, they got back in time before the water overflowed and were able to get the pumps up and running again. They then got the cement mixer running and started mixing up some cement. Before long, it was ready, and they began laying bricks. Well, one guy did! It was interesting to watch how it's done. Hello and welcome to Taylors Aboard.
