SRI LANKA BROMPTON BIKEPACKING 2026 DAY 2

Sri Lanka Bikepacking 2026 Day 2 An early start for us today, waking up at 4am and making our way to the Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress at 5am to have a hike up to catch the sunrise. It was a really nice morning hike up to the top of the rock and witnessed such a beautiful sunrise. It wasn’t as packed so it was good. The whole hiking area was very well made and maintained. It felt really sturdy too. Some parts will be quite a scare for those afraid of heights but it will be alright nonetheless. We then explored the whole part of the rock including its ancient terraces and rain pool and looking in marvel at the throne that the king once sat on. My, what a view. The rest of the gardens were nothing short of spectacular and wonder. We headed back to the sunshine villa and had a simple breakfast before cycling for 65km (70km +/-) towards Pollonuwara. It was a fairly flat section with a bit of rolling parts. It was mainly tarmac all the way and the roads are in splendid condition. Passed through paddy fields and also train tracks. Reached the Pollonuwara ancient city and bought the tickets but decided to explore during the late afternoon when it is cooler. Had a nice lunch before checking in. The hosts at Sanctuary Cove Guesthouse were really friendly and their hospitality was top notch. Saman and Wasa took care of whatever we needed and we did had quite a good conversation. The exploration at the Ancient City was fun and we could cycle in and did a very nice trip around the big area, which was around 20km in the whole round section. Ended the day with a nice Sri Lankan dinner and it was time to say goodnight. Tomorrow will start early as we will have close to 100km to cover.
