How a Japanese Wagyu farm is reducing GHG emissions with Bovaer® | Zero Carbon Beef Project

Shikishima Farm, home of Shiraoi Wagyu, a premium Japanese Black Wagyu brand born and raised in Hokkaido, is taking a leading role in tackling greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming. In this video, Masamitsu Igarashi shares the story behind their Zero Carbon Beef Project and the concrete steps they are taking to reduce the carbon footprint of beef production. ► What is the Zero Carbon Beef Project? With approximately 10,000 head of Japanese Black Wagyu cattle across Hokkaido and Tochigi Prefecture, Shikishima Farm is one of the few agricultural companies in Japan actively measuring and reducing GHG emissions. Using a system based on the international GHG Protocol, they track emissions across their full operation, from insemination to shipment. ► How is Shikishima Farm reducing emissions? Their approach combines three initiatives: shortening the fattening period to reduce feed consumption, increasing the use of domestically produced feed to cut transport emissions, and incorporating Bovaer®, a feed supplement already proven in the United States and Europe, to reduce enteric methane emissions from cattle. They also operate manure composting facilities, install vertical solar panels, and grow Giant Miscanthus as homemade roughage. ► Is beef from cattle fed Bovaer® safe? Yes. Bovaer® breaks down into natural compounds already present in the cow's digestive system and does not enter the meat you eat. It has been rigorously assessed and approved by leading independent food safety authorities. Food must be safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible.
