"Un Solo Uruguay es una confederación de sentimientos populistas", dice Pablo Carrasco (empresario)
Is tax exemption for large investments still beneficial to the economy? The issue returned to the political agenda last week, following the proclamation issued by the Un Sólo Uruguay (USU) movement on Sunday the 23rd, when it met to commemorate four years since its creation. In that statement, USU criticized tax exemptions for large companies, such as that for UPM's second pulp mill, and called for more state support for small and medium-sized rural producers. "Investment protection laws and investment promotion laws for large companies, but always leaving out the majority of local residents, who represent no less than 97% of the country's companies, the ones that truly drive the economy," the statement states. Last Monday, we discussed this and other USU proposals at a panel discussion where one of the members was Julián Cabrera, an agricultural producer in Durazno who has spoken at several of the organization's events. Pablo Carrasco, who participates in the same panel every two weeks, overheard the exchange and wrote a message that was deeply dissatisfied with the image of the Uruguayan countryside. "That vision of the interior and agriculture doesn't represent me, nor many of my colleagues," Pablo said off-screen. What are your disagreements with USU?
