Jorge Zabalza, a former member of the MLN (Nationalist Leftist Party), confirmed this week that during the 1990s, the Popular Participation Movement (MPP) was financed through "alternative" methods, including bank robberies. Zabalza added that former President José Mujica and current Interior Minister Eduardo Bonomi were aware of these operations. In an interview on the program Rompkbzas on El Espectador, the former leader endorsed the information on these issues provided by "Beto," an anonymous source in the book "Huidobro: Sin remordimientos," a portrait of the former Defense Minister, written by journalist María Urruzola. In that investigation, the source claims he participated in several robberies between 1993 and 1998. According to his testimony, the stolen money was divided between the criminals and the "Orga," and in total, the MLN received about US$20 million. Urruzola's book has been generating controversy since last week. The MPP has not issued an organizational statement, but several leaders maintained that the complaint is nonsense intended to "tarnish" Mujica. Meanwhile, the criminal justice system has reopened the investigation into the robberies that occurred 20 years ago and were then attributed to the so-called "supergangs" or, in some cases, "tupabandas."
