Tehran maintains that it retains authority over maritime traffic and links full opening to oil exemptions, sanctions relief, and a ceasefire in Lebanon. Over the past seven days, at least 109 tanker movements and some 36.8 million barrels of oil were confirmed to have been shipped out. Traffic peaked on June 24 and 25 before declining again after the attack on the cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely near the Oman route. The United States accused Iran of launching four drones: one struck the ship, and three were intercepted. Washington responded by bombing coastal radars and Iranian drone and missile facilities. Iran retaliated by attacking US-linked targets in Bahrain, home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet. Another oil tanker was subsequently hit in the Strait of Hormuz. The maritime crisis is directly linked to Lebanon. The United States, Israel, and the Lebanese government signed a framework agreement that includes the deployment of the Lebanese Army, a phased Israeli withdrawal, and the disarmament of Hezbollah. Hezbollah rejected the agreement and refused to surrender its weapons. Trump also claims that Iran agreed to extensive nuclear inspections, something Tehran denies. The Strait of Hormuz remains physically open, but under military surveillance, with heightened security, improvised routes, and a constant risk of further attacks.
