According to Bertolini, Donald Trump was "somewhat deceived" by those who portrayed an Iran ready to turn its back on its leader. The scale of the ceremonies therefore struck "Trump's self-esteem," transforming the funeral into a political message directed at Washington. Bertolini also recalls the US attacks on several railway bridges along the route to Mashhad, which caused disruptions to passenger rail services during the final stages of the funeral. The hypothesis that the attacks were specifically aimed at hindering the arrival of the participants remains, however, an interpretation by the general and not a proven intent.
