Michele Prospero argues that European countries' involvement in the war in Ukraine has now led, in his view, to "a situation of co-belligerence." According to the professor, the military, logistical, and political support provided to Kiev is so direct that it exposes European states to potential Russian retaliation far more serious than the espionage activities denounced by Western governments. Prospero also highlights the contrast between the stance taken by European governments and the growing attrition of Ukrainian society. While Europe, according to his analysis, is pushing to continue the conflict, protests against recruitment methods are taking place in Ukraine. Large segments of the population, Prospero claims, "can no longer bear" the human cost of the war. The United Kingdom is being attributed a central role. London, Prospero observes, consistently and "almost extremistly" supports the continuation of the war, also due to geopolitical and financial interests in Northern Europe. In his view, however, the stance shared in recent years by the Conservatives and Labour parties faces problems of consensus and credibility and does not seem to fully convince the British electorate.
