Reducing the size of your tree is important for bonsai proportions. Watch this maple transformation.

Bonsai expert Robert Cho takes a typical potted maple tree and transforms it into a beautiful bonsai tree. Something that most bonsai beginners do is they think they have to use the entire tree. Robert demonstrates that making the correct cut and reducing the size of your tree is how you find the right balance and proportion. Robert essentially only made three cuts and the rest of the transformation was done with wire and potting design. For basic proportions, the length of the bonsai pot should be about 80% of the height of the tree (after you prune it). If Robert didn't reduct the height of the tree, the bonsai pot would have become VERY large. This is one of the reasons we prune back trees when practicing bonsai.
