RUSHCLIFFE PARISH #12: NORMANTON ON THE WOLDS Normanton on the Wolds – “Norseman’s Village in the Wooded Uplands” We continue last weeks walk with Plumtree part 2, except we have crossed a parish boundary now. This Normanton-on-the-Wolds, a small village which has been tied to Plumtree for centuries. This is another Norseman’s village, this one set in the beautiful surroundings of the Nottinghamshire Wolds. Although practically conjoined to Plumtree, its quite different from its near neighbour. The land here is mainly agricultural and Green Belt designated, and the village sits in a shallow valley sandwiched between the A606 and rising hills to the East towards Cotgrave, Clipston and Tollerton. Normanton appears, and feels, very hidden away. This seclusion makes the southern end of the village in particular a very attractive place, owing to its peaceful setting. Most of the houses at that end of the village are set in their own grounds, protected by red brick walls and mature trees and hedgerows, which run along the length of the village street. The North is very different affair. Whilst still quite quiet generally speaking, its more about wide open plan gardens and sprawling plots, featuring driveways with more than a few expensive cars in them. Its all glued together by The Plough – Normanton’s pub, the village’s most popular feature.
