NO ESTÁIS EN LA CARNE, SINO EN EL ESPÍRITU | Thomas Manton | Romanos 8:9

In this reading from the Puritan Thomas Manton, we meditate on one of the most profound statements of the Apostle Paul: “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.” — Romans 8:9 What does it mean to be “in the flesh”? What does it mean to live “in the Spirit”? How can a believer know that they truly belong to Christ? Manton explains that the presence of the Holy Spirit produces a new nature, new affections, new desires, and a new purpose: to live for the glory of God. The Christian still lives in the flesh in the physical sense, but no longer lives under the dominion of the flesh nor is ruled by its sinful desires. This teaching calls us to examine ourselves seriously and ask: What takes first place in our affections? Temporal things or eternal things? Do we live for ourselves or for God?
