In this episode of our series on the First Epistle of John, we continue our study based on the exposition of Reformed theologian Arthur W. Pink, now considering the exhortation contained in 1 John 2:1: “I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.” Having addressed the reality of sin in the believer’s experience and the necessity of confession, the apostle John clearly establishes the moral purpose of the gospel: grace was not given to encourage indifference toward sin, but to lead God’s people toward a life of increasing holiness. This passage reminds us that, although believers continue to struggle against sin while in this world, they should never resign themselves to it or consider it compatible with fellowship with God. Throughout this study, we examine the relationship between justification, sanctification, and Christian perseverance, highlighting the biblical call to a life of obedience, dependence on Christ, and constant warfare against sin. Scripture does not present sinless perfection as a present reality in this life, but it does present holiness as the goal and normal direction of the Christian walk. This study invites believers to seriously examine their attitude toward sin and renew their commitment to living for the glory of God.
