In a provincial hotel, Potapov, a guest from Moscow, enters the room of his neighbor, Victoria, to listen to the final of an important football match on the radio. After 11:00, the hotel manager, Kaloshin, a rude and authoritarian individual, surprises the two. Without listening to the explanations, Kaloshin insults Potapov and forcibly throws him out, accusing him of immorality. Immediately after the incident, Kaloshin learns from the reception that Potapov holds the position of "the tramp". Ignorant but paranoid, the administrator does not know the term and panics, imagining that this is a high-sounding title for a high-ranking official in the ministry or an undercover inspector sent from Moscow. Desperate to escape the consequences of his abuse, Kaloshin decides to fake a nervous breakdown. He takes refuge in Victoria's bed and begins to behave absurdly, pretending to be a helpless "shit", hoping that madness will save him from the wrath of the "boss" in Moscow. The situation becomes explosive when Marina (Kalosin's wife) and Oleg (her lover) appear. In the midst of the scandal caused by his wife's jealousy and the presence of his lover, Kaloshin suffers a real heart attack, caused by extreme stress. Believing that he is dying, the administrator goes through a crisis of sincerity: he admits his life lived in fear and humiliation before any authority, makes his will and “blesses” his wife and her lover to stay together. At this point, the play turns from slapstick comedy to a profound human drama about the condition of the “little man”. The mystery dissipates in the most ridiculous way possible: it is discovered that a metrapage is a position without any political power. Once the danger disappears, relations return to their initial cynicism: Oleg loses interest in Marina, and Kaloshin, although saved by the doctor, is left with the shame of his own ignorance. The play ends with the cheerful entrance of Potapov, who announces the final score of the match, completely alien to the existential chaos he has caused, involuntarily, through his simple job.
