We are in a wealthy agricultural town in Italy. The lawyer Pedigo arrives in the town and takes a room with the widow Marta Pinelli. He asks the landlady to always address him as "lawyer Pedigo", then sends someone for the lawyer Martinotti. Silvia, the widow's daughter, thinking that he has interesting books, asks Pedigo to lend her a book, and he gives her a treatise on marriage. After a while, the porter arrives, who is poorly dressed. Why? Because no one had used his services anymore. All disputes were resolved amicably. Shortly after, the lawyer Martinotti arrives. The poor man had not had a client for years and has taken up gardening. The lawyer Pedigo hatches a plan. He calls Pillacchera, the local vagabond, into his new office and has him write a statement. After two days, the hall of the house was full of people. Mr. Calogero, the owner of the land on which Pillacchera's hut was located, also arrived. He was indignant, because he had received a summons. The summons stated that the land on which the vagabond's hut was located had become his property. From word to word, the owner learns that he can sue other neighbors for various reasons. The same thing happens to a rich woman, named Angelica Zummo, whose parrot had insulted Pillacchera. Out of fear, the people of the market began to give Pillacchera all kinds of gifts, to get rid of the problems.
