FESTIVA XIX | Armenian Dances, Part I

SMU Symphonia Festiva XIX - Masquerade Ball Victoria Concert Hall | 28 March 2026 Conducted by Adrian Chiang Armenian Dances, Part I is a celebrated work for a concert band composed in 1972 by Alfred Reed, and is widely admired for its colorful scoring, energetic rhythms, and emotional depth. The piece is based on authentic Armenian folk songs collected by the Armenian priest and ethnomusicologist Komitas Vardapet. Reed transformed these melodies into a vibrant and expressive band composition that highlights the rich musical traditions of Armenia. The work is structured as a suite of four folk song settings: Tzirani Tzar (The Apricot Tree); Gakavi Yerk (Patridge’s songs); Hoy, Nazan Eem (Hoy, My Nazan); Alagyaz and Gna, Gna (Go, Go). Each section presents different moods and characters, ranging from lyrical and expressive melodies to lively dance rhythms. Reed’s orchestration skillfully distributes the folk tunes across the band, allowing various instrumental colors to shine. Follow us on social media!
