FESTIVA XIX | Dánzon No 2

SMU Symphonia Festiva XIX - Masquerade Ball Victoria Concert Hall | 28 March 2026 Conducted by Adrian Chiang This composition from 1994 is one of the most popular Mexican contemporary pieces, a cultural symbol so strong that it has been colloquially known as Mexico’s “second national anthem”. Dánzon is the official dance of Cuba, a formal partner dance accompanied by elegant and virtuosic music. The solo clarinet opens with a lyrical and contemplative melody. After establishing a calm melodic line, the piece devolves into a fast and energetic section with ever-increasing tempo– the main theme. There are brief moments of respite in a contrasting middle section where the calmer motif is passed between the piccolo, flute, oboe, and violin, but it is short-lived and we return to building up to a variation of the main theme. The energy is captivating until the very end, where the piece ends with dramatic dynamic changes and artistic flourish. Truly, this piece is emblematic of Márquez’s mastery of musical contrast and instrumentation. Follow us on social media!
