Fishing Buntzen Lake...Water Drainage Changed Everything

Buntzen Lake fishing was way tougher than expected this trip. I showed up last weekend and found the lake level had dropped like crazy, with the water looking around 1.5 to 2 meters lower than normal. Entire shorelines changed, old drop offs felt like the new shallows, and the whole lake just looked weird. If you fish Buntzen often, you’ll know right away that the conditions are totally different right now. I tried everything I had including Trout Magnets, PowerBait, trout worms in multiple colors, and spoons. I worked the top, middle, and bottom of the water column and still got almost nothing going. We had a few nibbles and followers, but honestly I think some of those were pike minnows and not even trout. Even my girlfriend got skunked, which almost never happens, so you already know it was one of those days. Still, it was a fun time on the water and I got to show the spots where I found fish and how different Buntzen looks right now with the lake drawn down so much. Looking back, I think running flies under a bobber might have been the better move for the smaller cutthroat trout I saw close to shore. Hopefully this video helps you learn from my mistakes before your next Buntzen Lake trout fishing trip. If you’ve been there lately, let me know what has been working for you because this lake definitely humbled me on this one.
