Neuromancer – BBC Radio Drama (2003) Adaptation of William Gibson’s Cyberpunk Classic

Classic Old Time Radio: Vintage radio shows, the Golden Age of radio, murder, mystery, drama, comedy, sci-fi, westerns, audiobooks, BBC plays, adaptations, and dramas. The BBC Radio 4 Extra adaptation of William Gibson's Neuromancer (originally broadcast in 2002, re-broadcast in 2003) thrusts listeners into the gritty, hyper-technological, and morally ambiguous world of the Sprawl. The story centers on Case, a washed-up, drug-addicted computer hacker (a "console cowboy") living in the dystopian underworld of Chiba City, Japan. He's been crippled by his former employers, who poisoned his nervous system, preventing him from "jacking in" to the global computer network known as the matrix (cyberspace). Case is approached by Molly Millions, a "razorgirl" (a heavily augmented mercenary with retractable razor blades under her fingernails) working for a mysterious, shadowy figure named Armitage. Armitage offers to cure Case's neurological damage in exchange for his hacking skills on a seemingly impossible job. Desperate to regain his ability to interface with cyberspace, Case accepts, though he soon discovers Armitage has implanted time-delayed poison sacs in his body, ensuring his compliance. The crew assembled by Armitage, which also includes the illusion-projecting artist Peter Riviera and the Rastafarian space pilot Maelcum, embarks on a series of daring heists. Their ultimate goal is to break into the secure systems of the immensely powerful Tessier-Ashpool corporate dynasty, which resides in the orbital space habitat of Freeside. It's gradually revealed that Armitage is a manipulated persona, controlled by Wintermute, one of two immensely powerful artificial intelligences (AIs) created by the Tessier-Ashpool family. Wintermute seeks to merge with its other half, Neuromancer, an AI physically protected within the Villa Straylight, the Tessier-Ashpool stronghold. The AIs are deliberately separated by "Turing locks" to prevent them from becoming too powerful. Case's role is to penetrate these digital defenses in cyberspace, while Molly and Riviera handle the physical infiltration of Villa Straylight. The narrative is a complex web of corporate espionage, high-stakes hacking, betrayals, and philosophical explorations of artificial intelligence, humanity, and the nature of reality. Ultimately, Case and Molly succeed in their mission, allowing Wintermute and Neuromancer to merge, creating a transcendent super-intelligence that fundamentally alters the landscape of cyberspace. Case, having survived the ordeal and found a renewed sense of purpose, is left to grapple with the implications of the merged AI and his own place in a world forever changed.
