Cátedra 2021: "La explosión artística europea del siglo XIII entre Norte y Sur"

"The European Artistic Explosion of the 13th Century: North and South," a lecture given by Justin Kroesen, Professor of Cultural History at the University of Bergen (Norway), curator of the religious art collection at the University Museum of Bergen since 2016, and director of the 2021 Chair "Medieval Art: Encounters between Museums and Churches." The lecture was given on November 11, 2021. The program of the 9th Prado Chair is dedicated to medieval art. Although this period has been present in the collection since its inception and has become even more significant with the Várez-Fisa donation in 2013, it is not the museum's most well-known aspect. In this lecture series and the scheduled seminars, we propose a contextual reading of the Prado's medieval collection. Context is understood in two senses. On the one hand, we will analyze the original environment of the pieces that endowed them with meaning and significance: the ritual space inside churches. On the other hand, we will explore the geographical context of the works and place them within a European context, asking how they fit into the artistic landscape of medieval Europe.
