Inside the Investigation: Pursuit of an Armed Bank Robber
On December 15, 2021, PC Logan Smith of York Regional Police responded to an armed bank robbery in Markham. After spotting the suspect fleeing with cash, PC Smith engaged in a solo foot pursuit through residential streets and a narrow footpath. Despite communication issues that left him without immediate backup, Smith continued the chase. When the suspect stopped, turned, and aimed a firearm at him, PC Smith responded by discharging his weapon to stop the threat. The suspect survived, and Smith rendered aid until fellow officers arrived. His actions demonstrated exceptional courage, preventing further harm to the community. PC Smith's bravery and decisive actions in a life-threatening situation have been recognized as one of the most courageous responses reviewed by police counsel and have been submitted for the Constable Garrett Styles Courage in the Line of Duty Award.
