Albion Bay Spearfishing Tournament — Bad Vis, Good Vibes, Big Impact

Spearfishing the Lost Coast Spearfishing Tournament at Albion Bay, California — and the visibility was brutal (we're talking 4 feet or less). There were strong currents and surges that were not playing in our favor, or anyone's favor for that matter. Here's how we still made it a great day in the water, why this tournament matters way beyond just the dive, and what it's like inside the spearfishing community on California's coast. This tournament isn't just about the hunt — many divers here were on the front lines of removing invasive purple sea urchins that have exploded in population and are eating through kelp forests along the West Coast. That kelp loss has crushed abalone populations for years. Between everyone competing, we pulled almost 30 gallons of urchins out of the water — a small but real dent in restoring balance to this ecosystem.
