Lima’s Beaches Were Not What I Expected

I've lived in this coastal city off and on for years but never actually dipped my toes in the beaches that sit below the cliffs. This vlog is my attempt to find out whether the sweep of shoreline under the boardwalk is worth the visit. The day begins with breakfast and a visit to Playa Waikiki, where morning fog curls off the ocean and the cliffs feel like the edge of the world. Down on the first shore I discover smooth pebbles instead of sand, a culture of surfing rooted in history, and a vendor serving slush made from real fruit. It’s easy walking down; climbing back up is another matter entirely. Later I trade pebbles for a long stretch of sand bustling with families, chairs and umbrellas for rent, and vendors selling everything from full meals to bathing suits. Nearby, a fishing pier holds an artisanal market where fishermen still haul in corvina and octopus by hand, and lunch is a simple plate of grilled fish eaten with the sound of waves and the hum of traffic behind me. In the afternoon I cool off with a passion‑fruit popsicle and discover the small joy of having food delivered to my chair while the water numbs my feet. As the sun sets, I wander into a bohemian neighborhood where the streets glow with lanterns and Chinese New Year fireworks.
