From a young age, we were indoctrinated through media and education that our identity as Egyptians is something that extends back to the time of the Pharaohs. Something pure, authentic, and immutable. They convince us that we are the heirs of seven thousand years of civilization. This Egyptian identity has become exactly like the bohemian set of glasses in our mother's china cabinet—something you're forbidden to touch, forbidden to drink from, forbidden even to breathe near, but you're expected to sacrifice your life for it if anyone dares to touch it. We absorb this idea completely until it becomes an absolute truth, beyond any doubt—a scientific fact, like the sun rising in the east or the president not being stubborn. And we continued living like this until, in recent years, a new argument started to emerge and escalate every hour around this issue of identity. The latest being the controversy surrounding Mohamed Ramadan's film "Son of the Lioness." A very simple story about a slave breaking free and rebelling against his masters in the 19th century… Suddenly, the whole country went into overdrive as if a meteor was about to hit the October Bridge. An art critic described the film as a “falsification of history and an attack on identity,” and the head of the antiquities department demanded immediate censorship, declaring that “identity and civilization are red lines, just like religion.” What's all this fuss about? A movie? When you see this violent reaction, you immediately understand that the film touched a raw nerve. But the real surprise is that the thing they're so fiercely defending isn't even 100 years old. It's just an idea invented by a few Egyptian intellectuals during the British colonial era, and the strange thing is, they knew perfectly well that they were making it up out of thin air to serve specific political goals and agendas at the time. And this "red line" was just a draft that was written and revised several times. How is that possible? Let's find out...
