Velowende: Wie Velofahren Städte verändert – Gespräch mit Ursula Wyss
Ursula Wyss runs an office for strategic urban development and urban mobility. She and her co-authors of the book "Velowende – Für eine lebendige Stadt" (https://ruefferundrub.ch/buecher/zeit...) are convinced that a bicycle revolution means not only doing something for bicycles, but also understanding human mobility as a whole. As long as the bicycle is not recognized as an equal means of transport within this framework, there will be no transport revolution. Ursula Wyss explains how this is possible in the video interview. More about the book "Velowende – Für eine lebendige Stadt": There are hardly any cities that don't focus on promoting cycling, but these promises are often followed by little action. Instead of striving for a bicycle-friendly city with a cycling share of over 30%, planning and politics still prioritize the car in everyday life. Arguments for why "it's unfortunately not possible" are readily available: "It's too hilly here," "the roads aren't wide enough," or "the forecasts predict ever-increasing car traffic." Cycling is a crucial part of the solution to our traffic problems. A true transportation revolution requires changing habits and a different perspective on the city, one that questions the car-centric system and identifies better alternatives. Becoming a cycling city means, above all, welcoming cyclists. This requires both: grand gestures and small details. And commitment at all levels, from all stakeholders, because: becoming a cycling city is a matter of will. Fortunately, there are successful examples: cities like Paris, Freiburg im Breisgau, and Bern, which are leading the way, courageous decision-makers, and an increasingly widespread planning practice based on the insights of cycling-friendly countries like the Netherlands and Denmark. What they all have in common is a belief in the potential of cycling and a clear prioritization of urban transportation policy. The Netherlands, and Amsterdam in particular, served as a model for this book. Contrary to popular belief, the bicycle was by no means a foregone conclusion there as an equal means of transport. Until recently, the car dominated the city streets. However, the history of transport policy in the Netherlands has progressed in favor of the needs of urban dwellers.
