Haben die Vereinten Nationen noch eine Zukunft? Podiumsdiskussion zum Friedensgutachten 2026

How should Germany respond to the fact that the US and other states are withdrawing resources and political support from the United Nations and development cooperation? How can we prevent peace, security, and development from being sidelined by the new great power politics? What options exist to secure the future of the United Nations? These questions were the focus of our panel discussion on June 9, 2026, on the Peace Report 2026, published the day before by the four major German peace research institutes. Tobias Debiel (INEF) introduced the report. The panelists were Nicole Deitelhoff (PRIF), Katharina Ahrendts (Federal Foreign Office), Gabriele Hoerschelmann (Mission OneWorld), and Achim Steiner (former head of the UN Development Programme), who joined via live video link from Oxford. Uwe Trittmann (Evangelical Academy Villigst) moderated the discussion. The event was hosted by the Protestant Academy of Berlin in cooperation with the Protestant Academy of Villigst, and jointly with the four institutes that publish the annual Peace Report: the bicc – Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies, the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH), the Institute for Development and Peace at the University of Duisburg-Essen (INEF), and the PRIF – Leibniz Institute for Peace and Conflict Research.
