Two days of diving during Carnival 2026. Ilha da Vitória and Ilha Anchieta — two of the most iconic dive sites on the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil, each with its own history, landscape, and weight. Ilha da Vitória was the first place I ever dived outside of a course, back in 2008. Nearly twenty years later, I returned to find the grottoes I'd kept in my memory ever since — and to explore tight passages that call for exactly the kind of diving we train for. Ilha Anchieta, on the other hand, was completely new to me. An island that carries centuries of history — from indigenous community to correctional colony, from political prison to State Park — and that today holds some of the best dives in the state of São Paulo. The operation was led by OmniMare, departing from Marina Barra Seca in Ubatuba. Four dives in two days, with the right group and the sea cooperating (at least on the first day). In the video, alongside the underwater and aerial footage, we share a bit of each island's history — the caiçara community that still lives on Vitória, the 1952 prison uprising on Anchieta, the Cousteau statue that was removed from the seabed and never returned — and what it means to come back to a place after so long. This was Operation Ubatuba.
