The Hidden Canal Beneath This Sheffield Road
Did you know you’re driving over a lost canal in Sheffield? In this episode of Wobbly Runner Exploring, we uncover the forgotten Greenland Arm of the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, a hidden piece of South Yorkshire’s industrial and transport history that has almost completely disappeared beneath the modern road network. Joined by Calvin from Hidden Sheffield Walks, we use old maps, aerial imagery and on-location exploration to trace the exact route of this lost canal arm, built in the early 19th century to serve local collieries and industry. Once a vital part of Sheffield’s transport infrastructure, this short but important branch carried coal and goods during the city’s industrial peak—before being gradually cut off, abandoned, and ultimately erased. Today, thousands of people unknowingly drive along its route every day. Together, we explore what remains, reveal the hidden clues still visible in the landscape, and piece together the story of how this historic canal vanished. This video is perfect for anyone interested in railway history, canals, industrial archaeology, and the lost transport networks of the UK.
