Episode 1: Who are they? Episode Synopsis: When learning about Brazilian history, the indigenous population is often portrayed with discrimination, as a people associated with backwardness, laziness, and savagery. Because of this, the current context of these ethnic groups ends up being overlooked. In this episode, members of the Krenak (MG), Kaxinawá (AC), Ashaninka (AC), Yanomami (RR), Pankararu (PE), and Kaingang (SC) tribes discuss the subject, showing their points of view on how they are treated in society. Indigenous People in Brazil - The ten-episode television series Indigenous People in Brazil shows how the indigenous people of nine Brazilian groups live and what they think: the Ashaninka and Kaxinawá of Acre; the Baniwa of the Rio Negro, in Amazonas; the Krahô of Tocantins; the Maxacali of Minas Gerais; the Pankararu of Pernambuco; the Yanomami of Roraima; The Kaiowá of Mato Grosso do Sul; and the Kaingang of the Southern region of the country. The series features interviews with inhabitants from different parts of the country, who express the relationship, not always friendly, between indigenous and non-indigenous people, from the time of the "discovery" to the present day. The themes focused on by the characters in the series are: the identity of indigenous people, their languages, their customs and traditions, colonization and contact with non-indigenous people, the dispute over land, integration with nature and the rights gained. Indians in Brazil is an initiative of TV Escola, of the Secretariat of Distance Education, of the Ministry of Education, produced by the NGO Vídeo nas Aldeias.
