ÍNDIO CIDADÃO? (DF, 2014, 52')

We are making "ÍNDIO CIDADÃO?" (DF, 2014, 52 min.) available in its entirety on this date, which marks 29 years since the promulgation of the 1988 Federal Constitution. The film presents a historical audiovisual account of the participation of the indigenous movement in the National Constituent Assembly (1987-88) and interviews with the memories of the coordinators of the Union of Indigenous Nations - Ailton Krenak and Álvaro Tukano - and leaders who actively participated in this mobilization, such as Davi Kopenawa, Mario Juruna, Moura Tukano, Paulo Paiakan, Pirakumã Yawalapiti, and Raoni Metuktire. The highlight of this process is Ailton Krenak's intervention in the Plenary (   • ÍNDIO CIDADÃO? - Grito 3 Ailton Krenak  ) in defense of the popular amendment proposing a chapter on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. This contemporary account of the Indigenous movement's struggle documents the political influence of the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) in the National Congress in 2013, advocating for the maintenance of constitutional rights achieved in the face of the anti-Indigenous offensive by the Rural Caucus – represented at that time by Constitutional Amendment Proposal No. 215/2000. The historic occupation of the Chamber of Deputies' Plenary during Indigenous April 2013 was compiled using incredible images provided by partner Kamikia Kisedje and archives from TV Câmara. The narrative unfolds through documentation of the participation of APIB representatives in a joint working group with deputies, including recordings of public speeches and interviews with Aurivan "Neguinho" Truká, Dinamam Tuxá, Ninawa Huni Kuin, Paulo Tupiniquim, Sonia Guajajara, among others, reflecting the collective protagonism of Indigenous movement leaders. Today marks 24 years of the Union's failure to complete the demarcation of all indigenous lands in the country, according to the deadline established in article 67 of the Transitional Constitutional Provisions Act. The struggle and mourning of the Indigenous Peoples are ongoing in Brazil, and the question persists: Indigenous Citizen? Let the cry for land, life, justice, and demarcation now echo!
