In 1984, Maeda left New Japan Pro-Wrestling to compete in the first UWF. Three months after the first UWF ceased operations, on December 6, 1985, he returned to New Japan Pro-Wrestling in a business partnership with Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Osamu Kido, Nobuhiko Takada, and Kazuo Yamazaki.
