Founded by Antonio Inoki in January 1972, New Japan Pro-Wrestling is currently under the umbrella of Bushiroad Inc., which produces various content, primarily trading card games. Bushiroad President Takaaki Kidani is known as a huge pro wrestling fan. On January 31, 2012, the 40th anniversary of New Japan Pro-Wrestling's founding, Kidani acquired all of the company's shares from its then-parent company, Yuke's Co., Ltd., and took over management. New Japan's performance had been sluggish due to Inoki's retirement, a decline in the appeal of its content due to wrestler departures and failed events, as well as the impact of the mixed martial arts boom. However, under the Bushiroad management, various measures have been implemented to successfully bring back audiences, and performances have been recovering steadily. But why did New Japan Pro-Wrestling, which Inoki founded and grew, end up in someone else's hands? The answer dates back to 2005. 2005 was a tumultuous year for New Japan Pro-Wrestling. In January, contract renewals saw a 20% pay cut for all New Japan wrestlers. The company's financial difficulties became so apparent that, just before the October 8th Tokyo Dome event, then-president Simon Inoki issued the following announcement: "For future tours, travel by plane or train is prohibited. All tours will be shared by touring buses." Adding to the chaos on the ground, Choshu Riki returned as on-site manager. Choshu Riki, who had briefly returned to New Japan the previous year from "WJ/Fighting of World Japan," a promotion he had founded himself, returned to New Japan Pro-Wrestling on October 8th as on-site manager. Unsurprisingly, the on-site staff reacted fiercely. Particularly outspoken was Koji Kanemoto, nicknamed the "Junior Fighting Boss," who was so vocal about his superior, calling Choshu "that guy," saying, "I'll listen to what you say, but I won't listen to what you don't!
