When it comes to mountains in Moldova, the first thing that comes to mind is Codri – a vast, hilly area by Moldovan standards, occupying the entire center of the country. The densest forests and nature reserves are also located here. To experience the mountains and the dense forests with wild animals and centuries-old trees, we're heading to the Beech Region and the highest point in Moldova – Balanesti Hill. We've got a pretty good highway. We're heading west, passing Straseni and Calarasi. Along the way, horses and fields with solar panels flash by the window, we overtake carts loaded with firewood, and bikers pass us. At some point, the hills to the left become increasingly higher, meaning it's time to turn off the highway and drive along the gravel road, where we reach the green gates of the nature reserve. The Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve stretches across three districts and covers an area of ​​5,500 hectares. Today, we'll see a cascade of lakes and head into the forest, where we'll hike past two peaks, each nearly 400 meters high.
