Red Sky at Night... Mom Loon's Delight

The brilliant setting sun lit up the clouds in the northern sky over Lake Vermilion on June 10. What a spectacular scene in the Arrowhead of far northern Minnesota. We had been monitoring a little loon family, and it had been 27 days since a member of our Vermilion Lake Association's Live LoonCam team noticed Mom Loon had made a nest and was sitting on an egg. Soon there were two eggs and she and her mate took turns on the nest. This is the story of the next two days, and how the mating pair brought two new loon chicks into the Lake Vermilion ecosystem. They showed caring, patience, persistence and problem-solving skills. And all of us are rewarded! Our special thanks to Eric Hanson, who contributed images and video clips from the water at "loon-level." And to Access Broadband of Virginia, Minnesota, for the excellent WiFi internet service for our project.
