If Mara (Insta @adventures_of_mara) wants to poop or fart, she has to put in a catheter. Her anus is a hole in her stomach. Mara has ulcerative colitis, a chronic intestinal disease. It started with blood in her stool during a stressful exam period. Within a few months, Mara's condition worsened: She had to run to the toilet 30 times a day and often fell asleep there from exhaustion. Suddenly, her whole day revolved around pooping. Her entire stomach became inflamed. Intensive care unit. Diagnosis. And then Mara spent several years trying every medication and every treatment. Nothing was a long-term solution. The colon had to go. Her butt was sewn up. Mara got a stoma, an artificial anus with a bag on her stomach. Finally, her life didn't just revolve around finding the nearest toilet. But the stoma leaked regularly, and Mara sometimes stood in front of her colleagues with poop on her stomach. Today, after an additional surgery, Mara has a colostomy pouch and relieves herself 3-5 times a day, depending on what she eats and drinks, using a catheter. For a long time, Mara felt repulsed by herself. Friendships were ruined because of her illness. Many lacked understanding. Some were overwhelmed and wanted her to comfort them. Others didn't understand why she no longer enjoyed cocktails. Mara told her current boyfriend everything on their first date.
