Alfredo Apilánez - “Against the Cult of Work” (June 25, 2026) - 4K. The book launch for “Against the Cult of Work” will take place next Thursday, June 25, at the Taifa Llibres bookstore, presented by its author, Alfredo Apilánez. Against the Cult of Work. A reflection on class, social reproduction, and the subversion of everyday life. Our world is the world of work, conceived as an end in itself and not as an activity to satisfy genuine needs. The result is the uselessness and harmfulness of most current jobs. Apilánez deploys his critical power by addressing the world of social reproduction and revealing its role as the foundation of the workforce necessary for capitalist valorization. Both spheres—wage labor and domestic-reproductive work—make up the “social factory.” Therefore, any practice that aspires to emancipation must confront the centrality of labor as the mortar of social organization. The growing superfluity of labor, a consequence of the colossal technological apparatus, and, on the other hand, capital's dependence on the continuous flow of living labor, lie at the heart of a contradiction that renders impossible the promise of reducing working hours through automation. This "silent compulsion," inscribed in the DNA of the capitalist system, is pushing all of humanity toward self-destruction. The class struggle cannot be limited to the relationship of exploitation and needs to address racism, ecological devastation, and patriarchy to identify its enemies. This book is built upon carefully compiled quotations from other texts, which, when rigorously and critically examined, become a relevant instrument for theoretical renewal. Furthermore, it recognizes the crucial importance of popular struggles as spaces where a life based on non-capitalist relations is being foreshadowed. Alfredo Apilánez An economist by training and a social science professor, he has developed his theoretical work striving to integrate Marxist and anarchist traditions, distancing himself from any ideological orthodoxy. In his writings, he analyzes the consequences of the capitalist system on everyday life, transcending the narrow confines of political economy. He has participated in numerous conferences and published many texts, which he shares on his blog, Trampantojos y Embelecos, and on websites such as Rebelión, Kaosenlared, and La Haine. He is a member of Associació 500x20, a collective against real estate violence in Nou Barris (Barcelona). He is the author of Las entrañas de la bestia.
