¿Qué es una escuela?: una lección para los Pedagogos
I recently attended the presentation of the book "A Cry for the Children of Gaza," where anthropologist Marta Venceslao showed images I can't forget: children and teachers giving classes amidst the ruins. That made me think again about what a school truly is, starting with its Greek origin, skholé, that "parenthesis" or free time for learning. In this video, I recount that experience and take the opportunity to reflect on modern pedagogy, the Bologna Process, the LOGSE (General Law on the Organization of the Education System), and the vast sums we've spent on digital whiteboards, to argue that school must remain, above all, a transmission of knowledge, not self-help therapy or lectures on "what's the point" of what we study. I conclude by recalling Albert Camus's speech to his schoolteacher upon receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature. Photo of Amira by Fadi a Thabet, photographer in the Gaza Strip.
