Two iconic Class I railroads, two modern Wabtec rebuilds that are reshaping today’s main lines. From the 2026 Amherst Railroad Hobby Show, ScaleTrains introduces two all-new Rivet Counter HO Scale locomotives rebuilt by Wabtec from the venerable GE AC4400CW: CSX’s CM44AC/CM44AH and Union Pacific’s C44ACM. These modernized workhorses combine proven AC traction with 21st-century technology, making them essential power for any modern-era HO Scale roster. CSX’s rebuild program began in September 2019, when former AC4400CW #202 emerged from Wabtec’s Erie, Pennsylvania, facility as #7200 — the first of the new CM44AC series. Through 2025, CSX contracted with GE/Wabtec to comprehensively modernize its fleet with upgraded control systems, new wiring, and a high-pressure common-rail fuel system that improves efficiency by up to 18 percent while increasing reliability. Externally, the changes are unmistakable, including an ET44-style wide cab with a relocated nose door, a four-window cab layout, number boards above the windshield, revised long-hood cabinets, and raised radiator shutters for improved cooling. All units wear CSX’s YN3 paint scheme, with logos evolving from the boxcar emblem to today’s “.com” branding. Through this ambitious rebuild effort, the AC4400CW lives on as the CM44AC and CM44AH, powering CSX into the future. Union Pacific’s modernization program is even larger in scope. From early 2018 through 2025, UP partnered with GE — now Wabtec — on a landmark rebuild effort covering 1,030 locomotives at a cost exceeding $1 billion, the largest investment in rebuilt power in rail industry history. This program transformed AC4400CWs, along with select DASH 9 and AC6000CW units, into the modernized C44ACM (“M” for Modernization). Internally, these locomotives received Wabtec’s latest control systems and wiring, along with the “FDL Advantage” fuel system, replacing 16 individual fuel pumps with a high-pressure common-rail design for up to 18 percent better fuel efficiency and improved reliability. Externally, many units gained ET44-style cabs, modern GEVO-inspired long-hood cabinets, and distinctive raised radiator grilles with ES44/ET44-style shutters, while Union Pacific’s evolving image resulted in four distinct paint scheme variations across the fleet. The Union Pacific models in this run represent two groups that retain their original cabs: road numbers #6151–#6213 (former Southern Pacific AC4400CWs) and #6468–#6514 (former Union Pacific AC4400CWs). All feature the raised radiator grille and shutter system. Whether on CSX or Union Pacific rails, these rebuilt AC4400CWs prove that smart modernization can extend the life of a legend — and now Rivet Counter brings that story to life in HO Scale.
