Laminate Sample #32: Infused Spread-Tow Carbon with 2mm Cork Core

Laminate Sample #32 is about thin cork as a core - combined for extra fun with some pretty 185g spread-tow carbon. The laminate is infused with Proset INF114 epoxy. Process materials include Enkafusion flow media and polyester peel-ply with spiral-wrap for feed and MTI hose for the vacuum side. CORRECTION: In the video, I show the resin content estimate as reflecting less resin uptake than the datasheet. Because I forgot to switch part of the spreadsheet from imperial to metric, this is not an issue at all - I just forgot to change a 9 to a 10.75. The actual estimate error was 0.16% - which is way to close to be clever - just luck. The datasheet linked at the end of this description is actually spot on! Sorry for the confusion. The core is 6mm CoreCork N20 from Amorim. This was given to me as a sample by Core Composites, the US distributor for CoreCork products. Thank you! The numbers don't look remarkable compared to other cores, but cork can bring a degree of toughness and impact resistance that may help make up for it's lack of shear and compressive properties. It is resistant to moisture uptake and has good fire, smoke and toxicity properties. And best of all, it comes from a tree that doesn't have to die at harvest-time! The infusion went well, especially considering he strange air and moisture issues often associated with "wood" and plant-based materials. Here the air seems to have been drawn off by the vacuum or remained trapped in the cork itself. The surfaces came out great!
