I'd like to introduce a place I recently visited. In May 2026, I went to "Rose Park" in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Rose Park Fukuyama City was reduced to rubble by the Fukuyama air raid of 1945, with approximately 80% of the city's urban area becoming a burnt-out wasteland. In 1956, citizens near Minami Park (the current Rose Park) planted about 1,000 rose bushes with the aim of "bringing beauty to the war-ravaged city and restoring peace to people's hearts," marking the beginning of "Fukuyama, the City of Roses." By 1965, it had largely taken on its current form and became known as "Rose Park" among the citizens. On April 13, 2024, it reopened after renovations, and the number of roses increased to 670 varieties and 7,000 bushes, making it a place of relaxation for citizens. Every year in mid-May, the Fukuyama Rose Festival, Fukuyama City's largest event, is held grandly with Rose Park as one of its main venues. 59th Fukuyama Rose Festival 2026 This is the largest event in Fukuyama, the city of roses, attracting approximately 400,000 visitors (total over two days). Centered around Midorimachi Park and Rose Park, the festival features a variety of roses in full bloom, hosting events such as a rose parade, a cut rose contest, and sales of rose-themed goods. Street performances will also be held in Central Park and the central shopping district.
