This is Guinea Conakry (It's Not What You'd Expect) 🇬🇳

In this video, I travel through Guinea 🇬🇳, a country I knew very little about before arriving and one that left a strong impression on me. I entered Guinea by land from Guinea Bissau, continuing my overland journey across West Africa. The crossing marked the beginning of a long route through changing landscapes, remote roads, and some of the most striking scenery I have seen in the region. One of the standout moments was passing through Fouta Djallon, often called “The Switzerland of West Africa.” After weeks of heat and dense cities, the environment here felt completely different. Rolling green hills, cooler air, dramatic cliffs, and vast mountain views reveal a side of West Africa that rarely gets attention. From there, I continued toward Conakry, the capital of Guinea. The shift in atmosphere was immediate. Conakry is intense, fast moving, and packed with life. The streets flow nonstop with cars navigating heavy traffic, motorbikes weaving through tight spaces, vendors lining the roads, and constant movement in every direction. My first stop in the city was food. I tried Lafidi, a local dish, right in the middle of Conakry’s nonstop buzz. Sitting there, surrounded by the sounds and rhythm of the city, captures the essence of everyday life in the capital. Next, I stepped into Madina Market, the largest and busiest market in Guinea. This place is pure energy. Endless rows of stalls, crowded walkways, negotiations, noise, color, and movement everywhere you look. Markets like this are where you truly feel the pulse of a city. I then visited the Grand Mosque of Conakry, one of the city’s most important landmarks. An impressive structure that reflects Guinea’s deep cultural and religious identity, where Islam plays a central role in daily life. Continuing through the city, I explored the Kaloum district. This area carries a noticeably different atmosphere, serving as the administrative and economic center with a mix of history, architecture, and coastal views. And just when the intensity of Conakry fully set in, I left the city by boat. A short ride across the water brought me to the Îles de Los, a small island group just off the coast consisting of three islands. Within minutes, the noise of the capital faded into ocean breeze, quiet shores, and a completely different pace of life.
