The route from Gallipoli to Lecce extends for approximately 38 kilometers through a predominantly flat landscape, characterized by olive groves, the Salento countryside, small towns, and coastal areas not far from the main road. The SS101, especially after modernization work in recent decades, has taken on the characteristics of a true expressway, with separate carriageways, two lanes in each direction, and grade-separated junctions that almost completely eliminate at-grade intersections. Starting from Gallipoli, the road begins in the northern part of the city, where the SS101 merges directly with the SS274 Salentina Meridionale, which continues towards Ugento, Leuca, and the southernmost tip of Puglia. The first section takes on the characteristics of a modern urban ring road, designed to ease traffic heading towards the famous seaside resorts of Gallipoli. Here, the junctions for Gallipoli South-Baia Verde, Gallipoli-Alezio, Gallipoli-Sannicola, and Gallipoli North-Rivabella-Lido Conchiglie intersect. This area is heavily influenced by summer tourism: along the coast, beach resorts, accommodations, and vast seasonal developments attract thousands of visitors during the summer months. Leaving Gallipoli, the road gradually bends northeast, crossing the Sannicola district and heading toward Galatone. The landscape changes slightly here: the sea recedes, and the highway passes through an agricultural hinterland dominated by olive groves, dry-stone walls, and the typical Salento countryside. From the Galatone junctions, connections branch off toward Seclì, Aradeo, Cutrofiano, and the inland area of ​​Grecìa Salentina. These exits also provide access to Santa Maria al Bagno and the northern Ionian coast. Continuing toward Lecce, the state road maintains an extremely straight course for many kilometers, a typical characteristic of major arteries built in the Salento plain. You will progressively encounter junctions and intersections with secondary roads heading toward Nardò, Copertino, Leverano, Sant'Isidoro, Porto Cesareo, and Galatina. The road then crosses the area between Lequile, San Pietro in Lama, Monteroni, and San Cesario di Lecce, territories closely integrated with the urban area of ​​Lecce. Here, traffic increases significantly compared to the southern stretch, especially during commuter hours, as the SS101 is the main link between the capital and the entire Ionian coast of the province. This stretch features several strategic junctions that distribute traffic toward the western Lecce ring road, the SS16 Adriatica to Maglie and Brindisi, and the urban network of the capital. Approaching Lecce, the highway gradually loses its suburban character, transforming into a flowing urban axis. The state road enters the city through Via Rudiae, Via Lequile, and Via Diaz, which form the final stretch of the SS101. Entering the Salento capital also marks the transition from a rural landscape to an urban setting filled with modern buildings, commercial activities, and major city infrastructure such as the Vito Fazzi Hospital, easily reached via one of the state road's last junctions.
