Completed and opened to traffic in 2015, the A58 is one of the most recent infrastructures in the Lombardy motorway system and was created with the aim of easing traffic on the historic Eastern Ring Road (A51) by intercepting traffic from the A1 and the A35 Brebemi motorways and redistributing it along the eastern edge of the city. Heading north, the roadway features modern standards: three lanes in each direction plus a continuous emergency lane, a wide central reservation, and state-of-the-art safety barriers. The route runs almost entirely on flat ground, with a predominantly straight course and wide curves that promote smooth driving. The infrastructure was designed with contemporary environmental mitigation criteria: numerous sections are flanked by noise barriers and green embankments that shield the highway from the surrounding residential areas. The landscape it traverses is typical of the lower Lombardy plain: cultivated fields, isolated farmhouses, irrigation canals, and small, regularly spaced urban centers. Unlike Milan's historic ring roads, the urban density here is not immediately apparent: the highway runs outside the main urban area, acting as a wider belt than the A50–A51–A52 ring road. After the junction with the A1 Milan-Naples motorway, the TEEM gradually intersects with the provincial roads connecting the municipalities of the eastern hinterland. The junctions are evenly spaced and provide access to towns such as Vizzolo Predabissi, Paullo, and Melzo, helping to reduce long-distance traffic passing through residential areas. The motorway maintains an orderly layout, with well-separated lanes and regularly spaced rest areas. Continuing north, traffic tends to increase near the junction with the A35 Brebemi motorway, another recent infrastructure linking Brescia to Milan along a more southerly axis than the A4. This junction represents one of the strategic points of the entire external ring road, allowing traffic to be diverted towards the Veneto region as an alternative to the historic A4 motorway. Further north, the motorway gradually approaches the Martesana area. The area is becoming slightly more urbanized, but the A58 remains outside the main centers, running in trenches or on embankments to limit its visual impact. The quality of the infrastructure remains high: draining asphalt, clearly visible road markings, and variable message signs informing about traffic conditions and potential delays on the historic ring roads. The northbound route ends at the intersection with the A4 motorway near Agrate Brianza. Here, the TEEM fully performs its function: intercepting traffic from southern and eastern Lombardy and distributing it towards Brianza, the A4 Turin-Venice motorway, or the A52 Northern Ring Road without impacting the most congested urban section. The northbound A58 is therefore a modern infrastructure, designed to ensure traffic flow and safety in an area with extremely high traffic density. Unlike historic motorways, built in eras when vehicle traffic was much lower, the TEEM is sized to support significant flows and integrates up-to-date technical solutions from both a structural and environmental perspective.
