Delhi doesn’t want to clinch the deal: NSCN-IM leader on stalled Naga Peace Accord

The Naga peace process, one of India’s longest-running political negotiations, remains unresolved despite decades of dialogue. In this exclusive interview, VS Atem, the Deputy Ato Kilonser (Deputy Prime Minister) of the NSCN-IM, speaks candidly on why the peace accord with the Government of India has been stalled. Atem blames New Delhi for delaying the agreement despite what he says were clear commitments made during the talks. He accuses the central government of creating new problems instead of resolving old ones — referring in particular to recent moves to fence the Indo-Myanmar border and end the Free Movement Regime (FMR). He warns that such steps could invite unrest among Naga communities living on both sides of the border. On the Manipur conflict, Atem says the violence has not weakened the Naga cause but has instead exposed the Indian government’s failures in handling the situation. He also comments on Kuki demands for a separate administration, saying the NSCN-IM supports such aspirations only within certain areas.
