The idealization of thinness on television and social media is a serious factor contributing to the onset and worsening of anorexia nervosa. In particular, "synspiration"—the glorification of extreme thinness as a symbol of virtue and self-control—risks causing viewers to feel intense physical dissatisfaction and lower their self-esteem. Furthermore, presenting extreme weight-loss methods such as inappropriate fasting and vomiting as "quick fixes" can encourage dangerous imitation by those seeking social validation. Moreover, the trend of affirming pathological starvation as a result of effort or a lifestyle pushes those affected into a vicious cycle. Given that online communities function as spaces that maintain and reinforce disorders that should be treated, those who disseminate information must be aware that their words can become a weapon that corners someone, and must possess the empathy to understand the difficulties faced by those on the other side of the screen.
